Apart from helping people in general Global H2O, is working together with the UN to address the Millenium Development goals. Under goal 7 (Environmental sustainability) we are working on target 10 (halving the number of people without access to a developed water source). There are currently 800 million people without access to clean drinking water.

A bit of history:
At the Millennium Summit in September 2000 the largest gathering of world leaders in history adopted the UN Millennium Declaration, committing their nations to a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty and setting out a series of time-bound targets, with a deadline of 2015, that have become known as the Millennium Development Goals.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the world’s time-bound and quantified targets for addressing extreme poverty in its many dimensions-income poverty, hunger, disease, lack of adequate shelter, and exclusion-while promoting gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability. They are also basic human rights-the rights of each person on the planet to health, education, shelter, and security.

Then the afternoon was spent doing audits on 4 of the previously drilled wells. When we audit wells we check on a number of factors to make sure they are still working correctly and make sure the water is still sanitary. We also speak with the people that are on the water committee in the local community to go over with what we are doing and seeing if they are having any issues.

• Global H2O currently has 8 boreholes in Uganda which we drilled. (1 in 2010, 4 in 2011, 3 so far in 2012)
• Global H2O has rehabilitated 5 boreholes in Uganda (all 2012)
• We will drill 6 NEW boreholes on this trip.
• Each borehole on average delivers enough water for 2,000 people. The yield may be enough for more, but the hand pumps can only deliver to a maximum of 2,500 per day.
• We have delivered enough water for 26,000 people thus far.
• We will deliver enough for an additional 12,000 people on this upcoming project
• Cost for delivering clean drinking water to a single person is about $6

We are not only proud of this important milestone, but grateful for the support of every donor and fundraiser in this effort to provide this universal right to people in desperate need.

For World Water Day Global H2O completed projects 7, 8, and 9 in Uganda.

The commitment to complete a school project as well as one other was fulfilled on March 22nd, 2012, as the last of the three projects went into use this morning. 560 school children will spend their first full day of school with a permanent water source on the school grounds.

We believe that water should be seen as a basic human right – one that will allow for better health, more time to be economically productive or to build on the basic level of education. In turn this will improve the ability for individuals and families to become economically independent in the dynamic and volatile environments of developing countries.

In 2010 the Global H2O team set out to take concrete steps to quench thirst by adopting a pro-active mindset to support communities in their search for clean water, in their search for a better life. Since then, our team has successfully completed five wells around Kitgum in Uganda, providing life-giving clean water to over 10,000 people in the area. For roughly the price of a liter of bottled water in some developed countries we offer a child access to clean water well into adulthood.

U.N. World Water Day, March 2012

On March 9th we will return to Kitgum with the objective of completing and handing over an additional three wells just in time to celebrate World Water Day on March 22nd.

Through various targeted community events, birthday or special occasion wishes, holiday charity dinners thoughtful individuals and companies have helped us raise enough funds since our last 2-well project in September 2011 to allow us now to put this current three-well-project on the map (our largest single undertaking to date).
